MODERN

Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. Another characteristic of modern dance, in opposition to ballet, is the deliberate use of gravity. This type of dance rejects the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body, often opting instead for deliberate falls to the floor.

  • Beginner Modern: ages 8-10

  • Intermediate Modern: ages 10-12

  • Advanced Modern: ages 12 and up (or by teacher placement)

POINTE

Pointe technique is a part of classical  ballet technique. Pointe shoes use structural reinforcing to distribute the dancer’s weight load throughout the foot, thus reducing the load on the toes enough to enable the dancer to support all body weight on fully vertical feet. Starting pointe is not just a question of age or physical maturity; readiness depends on strength, technique, attitude, and commitment. When a student is truly ready, the introduction to pointework is gradual and always carefully and knowledgeably supervised.

  • Pre Pointe, Pointe I, and Pointe II are all determined by teacher placement
